The name Hnivash has been recorded in Rus' since the 15th century. It is formed with the suffix -ash from one of the ancient dual-root names such as Gnevomir and Spitygnev. The name Hnivash is first mentioned in the "Description of Kyiv Castle." It was also used in Belarus and Russia, along with the names Gnevish and Hnivosh.
