Name «Hlushko»

The anthroponym "Hlushko" is derived from the adjective "hlukhyi," meaning "deaf," through the substantivizing suffix "-ko." The original meaning of this formation likely referred to "a somewhat deaf person." In Ukrainian sources, a peasant with the surname Hlushko is mentioned as early as 1606. This surname is also found among Zaporozhian Cossacks, for example, the Cossacks Matviy Hlushko and Ilko Hlushenko from the Uman regiment, as well as the Cossack Kunas Hlushchenko from the Bratslav regiment. In Polish sources, the anthroponym "Głuszko" is recorded as early as 1449.
