Name «Drob»

In the territories of Ukraine, the name Drob is recorded in 1468 in the form Drob. This name was popular and had derivative variants, such as Drobak, Drobek, Drobko, Drobiy, which were also found in Poland. In the Register of the Zaporozhian Army in 1649, Cossacks Vasko Drobei, Sydir Drobik, and Kurilo Drobikh are mentioned, and in the Transcarpathian village of Kosivska Polyana, a serf named Vontun Drobut is mentioned in 1720.In our opinion, the Ukrainian colloquial name Drob, meaning "small" or "tiny," is related to the verb "drobity" (to crush or to break). In the Prešov region, small children are still affectionately called by the diminutive Drobko. There, the surname Drobnyak is also used.
