The name Drimuta originates from a patronymic dating back to 1468, where a certain Bohdan Dryemoutievych is mentioned, hailing from the village of Lukovitsia (SSUM I 325). This name could have been formed from the verbal root "drimati" (to doze) with the use of the suffix "-ut," similar to anthroponyms like Grymut (Chu Prizv. 160). It can also be compared to surnames with a common root, such as Drimus and Driminec, which are prevalent in Ukrainian Transcarpathia (see Chu Prizv. 210), as well as the Bulgarian name Dremusha, often given to a sleepy child (Ilchev 185).
