Name «Dombrava»

The name Dombrava is not often found among Ukrainians. In Moldova, the anthroponym has been recorded since 1483. For example, in documents, there is mention of Ivan Doumbrav and Toader Dumbrava (SSUMI 331); in 1691, serfs Doda Dombrava and Mihaly from the village of Dilove (Belay 208). In the 15th century, the masculine name Dombrava was also used in Poland. For instance, in 1487: Nobilem Dambrowam et Dczbogium de Vyschokye (SSNO 463). There is no doubt that in the latter case, the personal name derived from the Polish word dąbrawa, which means 'oak grove'.
