The name Domak is first mentioned in Ukrainian sources in 1565 as Domak Chwedorowicz. However, in Polish written records, it appears even earlier in 1207 under the form Dommak. It is most likely that the name Domak is an apocopated variant of the Slavic dual-root name Domagoj. During the reduction, the postpositional component of the name (i.e., -go) was partially shortened (specifically, it became devoiced), resulting in the phoneme /g/ undergoing devoicing in a weak position.
