The VI Dictionary includes the name Danko only in the "Index of Shortened and Diminutive Forms." The root of the name Danko may have several etymological interpretations. The variant "Danko" derives from the name "Bohdan," while the variant "Danyko" comes from the name "Danylo."

The earliest records of the name Danko originate from Polissia, Halychyna, Bukovyna, and the territories of Poland. References to "Pania Danko Zhurzhevych" have been found from 1436, as well as a mention in 1550 of "Counselors Danko and Snezhko" in the city of Brest. From this name, the patronymic "Dankovych" is also derived.

Many records of the name Danko and Danyko date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. For example, in 1600, "Kharkiv merchant Danko Cholnenko" is mentioned, and in 1625, "Danko, son of Fedor Pakhyrov." The name Danyko was used among the Cossacks who fought in the Zaporizhian army in 1649, as well as in the 17th-18th centuries.
