The oldest Ukrainian record of the name Danets dates back to the 16th century. This is Danets Zavaleevich (Kerszta 132). The name Danets is also found among the Cossacks in 1649, for instance, Cossack Danets Mishchenko from the Korsun regiment (RVZ 135). The name Danets is of Ukrainian origin, which could have arisen through apheresis — a shortening — from the diminutive form of the name Bohdanets. However, the name could also have formed by adding the diminutive suffix -ets to the name Dan. This name is also known among the South Slavic peoples (Ilchev 161; Grk 76; Śim 72).
