The name 'Dabizha' genetically originates from Bulgarian or Serbian languages. Its original meaning was a wish for the newborn: "Da bude zhiv!", which translates to "May he live!" (Ilchev, 153). The name Dabizha emerged as a shortening of an analytical word form. In Ukraine, the name was first mentioned in 1753 (Demchuk, 31). Today, the names Dabizha and Dabizhyv are used only by Ukrainian Bulgarians who live in regions bordering Moldova and the Danube area. Among Serbs and Macedonians, the names Dabizha and Dabizhyv have been recorded since the 14th century (Grk, 73).
