The name Chuma likely derives from the name of the infectious disease - the plague. It is currently used in the Velykyi Bereznyi region, in Ukrainian areas of Eastern Slovakia, and in Lviv region. In the Middle Ages, this name was also used in Zatisia, particularly in the counties of Vaš and Bihor. For example, a record from 1221 states: "Czumacum consortibus suis" (Reg Var 2, 71); in 1229 - the anthroponym Chuma et Azarias (Reg Var 293).
