The name "Chuiko" is derived from the same root as the pseudonym Nechuy-Levytsky. Documents from 1649 mention individuals such as Ignat Chuychenko, a Cossack from the Kyiv Regiment, and Petro Chuyenko, a Cossack from the Korsun Regiment. There is also a reference to Kosti Chuy, a Cossack from the Bratslav Regiment. The modern Ukrainian form of the surname is Chuiko.
