Name «Chornysh»

Chornysh is a Slavic personal name derived from the root Chorn- ('black') with the attributive suffix -ysh. For example, in 1620, individuals named Chornysh are mentioned: Petrenya and Voytenya, who were serfs in the village of Myakoty in Volhynia. There is also a reference to a haiduk named Chornysh Petrushenya from the village of Rivky in Volhynia in 1620. In 1649, during the Cossack registrations, Cossacks from the Korsun regiment named Chornysh are found, among whom are Lokhvitsky, Berestenko, and Ryashchenko. In the 17th century, particularly among the Cossacks, the name Chornysh was already being used as a surname, for example, Cossack Ivan Chornysh from the Myrhorod regiment. In the 16th century, the personal name Chornysh was also relevant in Belarus, as evidenced by a record from 1570, which states: "and that Hanyus had three sons - Maksym, Chornysh, and Yan."
