The name 'Buhai' is an Old Rus' borrowing from Turkic languages, which translates to 'tribal bull'. Although this word is not documented among Slavic personal names, its derivatives, including nicknames and surnames, have been preserved in the Ukrainian language from the 14th to the 17th century. For example, in 1649, documents mention the surnames of Cossacks: Vasko Buhai from the Cherkasy regiment, Matviy Buhai from the Kaniv regiment, and Ivan Buhayenko from the Poltava regiment.
