Bohut

Dictionary meaning

The name Bohut, along with its derivative Bohuta, is an ancient Slavic formation that, besides Ukrainians, is also known among Czechs, Serbs, Russians, and Poles. According to Y. Svoboda, the name consists of two components. Likely, the direct root of the name served as the dual-root name Bohuteh. However, after the truncation of the postpositional root (-teh, meaning ‘comfort’), only the phoneme /t/ remained from it.In Ukraine, the name Bohut is currently not in use, but the memory of it persists in the surname Bohut, recorded in 1649 in Cossack registers. For example, there are mentions of Cossack Ihnat Bohut and Cossack Vasyl Bohutenko from the Uman regiment. There is also a notable record from 1772 from the Transcarpathian village of Zhdienovo - Bahut Vaszily. In recent years, there have been attempts in some cities of Western Ukraine (Drohobych, Uzhhorod) to revive this name. The surnames Bohut, Bohuta, and Bohutin have been preserved in Poland.
