Bohun

Dictionary meaning

The name "Bohun" is of ancient Slavic origin and is formed by truncation and suffixation from the word "Bohuněgъ." Its root "něgъ" translates as 'care, tenderness,' while the attributive suffix "-un" adds meaning to the name. Thus, the name's significance is similar to that of the component in the name "Bohumil."In Ukraine, the name "Bohun" has been recorded since 1611, notably in a record about a Cossack named Bohunъ Ilko. In the 1649 Register of the Military of Zaporozhian Cossacks, three Cossacks named Bohun are mentioned: Bohunъ Ivanovych, Bohunъ Lashchenko, and Cossack Bohunъ Pavlenko of the Kalyniv regiment. However, the name "Bohun" was also known beyond the Dnieper region. Besides Ukrainians, it was used by Russians, Poles, Czechs, Serbs, Bulgarians, and other Slavic peoples. In Western Slavic regions, the name has been documented since the 13th century. In medieval Poland, there were various phonetic variants of the name, among which "Bogun" and "Bohun" are prevalent (the variant Bohun was quite frequently recorded). Today, in Ukraine, the name "Bohun" is mainly used in surnames and place names. For instance, in 1649, Cossack Mykhailo Bohunъ of the Kropyvnyansky regiment was mentioned in documents. Several notable figures in Ukrainian history bore the name Bohun, including the well-known Ivan Bohun, a colonel of the Vinnytsia Cossacks during the time of Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
