The feminine name Bohumyla originated as a counterpart to the masculine name Bohumil, meaning "dear to God." Among Ukrainians, this name was first recorded in 1563: Bohumyla Ivanivna (Archives of YUZR 1/6 45; Seniv Women 147); in 1631: Bohumyla Lysovityanka Denisovaya - a landowner from Lutsk (Tup 460). Among Ukrainian writers, the feminine name Bohumyla was used by Oleksandr Dukhnovych in the play "Virtue Exceeds Wealth" (Works 530). In Poland, the feminine names Bohumiła and Bogumiła have been mentioned since the 13th century and continue to be used today (Bubak 60). Meanwhile, modern Ukrainian name dictionaries (for example, VIL 262) only reference the masculine name Bohumil, and that is only among outdated and rarely used names. In some cities of Western Ukraine, such as Lutsk, the name Bohumyla started to be used again in the 20th century (mostly among Catholics) (Skoruk 149).
