Among modern Ukrainian dictionaries of names, only Ivan Triynik's dictionary and the Dictionary of Proper Names by L.H. Skrypnyk and N.P. Dziatkivska mention the name Boholip, and even then only as an outdated and rarely used name. The earliest recorded instance of the name dates back to 1614: Boholip - archimandrite of the Halych Pansyiev Monastery (Tup 56). The name is composed of the root "Boh" (God) and the ancient adjective "lipiy," which means 'good, beautiful, better.' It may possibly be a calque from the Greek word "Theoprepes," which translates to 'worthy of God,' 'glorious,' 'wonderful.'
