Dictionary meaning

According to S. Ilchev, the contemporary Bulgarian name Kalin is the masculine equivalent of the Slavic feminine name Kalina. N. Kovachev notes that Kalin is a Slavic wish name that expresses the idea "May he be hardened!", which in Russian translates to "zakalyonnym."In the 14th century, the name Kalin was recorded in the village of Koromlya, near the city of Uzhhorod. Specifically, in documents from that time, one can find the entry: "Buna et Kalyn olachys." In the 15th century, the name Kalin began to appear in Bukovina, particularly in Moldavian writs. For example, in a document from 1491, it states: "Нѣгое Орбєскул ибрат єго Калин" (the city of Suceava). In 1571, a serf named Mandra Kalin from the village of Ospa is mentioned in documents, and in 1646, the name Kalin appears in the Transcarpathian village of Trebushany (now Dilove) in the entry: Oleksa Kalinuv. The name Kalin was also borne by five Cossacks of the Zaporizhian Host in 1649, including Cossack Kalin Beznos of the Bratslav Regiment, Kalin Ilyashevsky, Cossack Kalin Marchenko of the Mirhorod Regiment, Cossack Kalin Bazhan of the Kalnytsia Regiment, and Cossack Kalin Kozubenko of the Chernihiv Regiment. A serf named Kalin Krytsko is mentioned in 1678 in the village of Yasiniya. If the name Kalin has Greek origins, its introduction into the Slavic cultural context may have been influenced by the Slavic botanical word "alina."
