How name popularity moved from year to year
A name that felt inevitable in one decade can be rare in the next. This calculator takes the birth statistics already used on each name page and turns them into a ranking: pick a year, and you get the 30 names given most often to boys and to girls that year.
The share is counted within gender — so a girl name at 4% means four in a hundred girls born that year received it, not four in a hundred of all babies. Open any name to see its own chart across years.
Frequently asked questions
Where do these popularity rankings come from?
Each rank is counted from birth records: how many people born in that year received the name, as a share of all recorded births of the same gender. The list is not a poll and not a forecast of next year’s babies.
Why does the latest year stop before today?
The table follows the years for which we have processed birth statistics. Newer years appear when that dataset is updated — the calculator always opens on the most recent year we have.
Should I pick a name because it was number one?
A top rank means the name was common among people born that year, not that it is a better name. Use the list to see what classmates of a given age are likely to be called, then open a name page for meaning, forms and similar names.
Are boys and girls ranked together?
By default you see two lists of 30: boy names and girl names, each ranked inside its own gender. Switch the filter if you want only one column.
