The personal name "Chyzh" originates from the name of the bird — chizh. In Latin records, the name Chyzh has been documented as early as 1221, for example, as Chiz in documents concerning Peter and Dumas (Reg Var 272). In the Polish transcription of 1461, this name appears as: pan Jussko Cziżb (SSNO I 444). In addition to the mentioned record, written sources from Ukrainian territories of the 12th to 15th centuries also contain several references where the lexeme "Chyzh" and its derivative "Chyzhik" clearly have a distinctly Ukrainian graphic form. For instance, in a record from 1136, the names «Ciz» and «Sostros» are mentioned, as well as the attorney «Cziszik» from Sochyvets near Sambir (SSNO I 444 - 445).
