Name «Zhupan»

The name "Zhupan" is a nickname type that originates from the ancient South Slavic title "zhupa" (a county, an administrative-territorial unit in the Austro-Hungarian Empire), which meant "nobleman" or "governor" (Ilchev 206; Grk 94). The earliest records of the personal name Zhupan come from the Slovenes of the city of Trieste (Merku 453). Regarding records from the territory of Ukraine, the first mentions of this name appeared in Transcarpathia, particularly in settlements in the 15th-16th centuries. However, by that time, the name Zhupan was already functioning as a surname. For instance, in 1470, Zupan Peter is mentioned from the village of Kosino (Leh Ber 334), and in 1509, Zupan Matyas is noted from the Bereg county (Leh Lei 23).
