Name «Veryha»

The name "Veryha" has an interesting origin. It was first mentioned in 1423 in Suceava: "istinnuy Veryha vataman" (SSUM I 330). In 1556, the name is recorded as Vericha Dubinin (OKZR III 267). Additionally, in Poland, the name Weriga appears in a document from 1437 (SSNO VI 47).The origin of the name is related to the archaic word "вериги" (verigy), which means 'iron chains, shackles, worn on the arms by religious fanatics as a means of self-mortification' (SSUM I 330).
