Name «Nalyvaiko»

The personal name Nalyvaiko is undoubtedly of nickname origin. It emerged as a result of reinterpreting the appellative Nalyvaiko, which in some regions means 'pourer' and in others refers to 'a grain weevil that appears during the pouring of rye.' In the Ukrainian Carpathians, the anthroponym Nalyvaiko has been repeatedly recorded since the 17th century. In other regions of Ukraine, this name has been documented since the 15th century. For example, in 1495: "our people... named Zenko and Nalyvaiko" - in Kamianets; in 1597, Nalyvaiko - a Cossack hetman; Severyn Nalyvaiko - a Cossack officer; in 1618, a serf Nalyvaiko - in the village of Roztoka. Additionally, in 1649, Cossacks from the Cherkasy and Kaniv regiments: Kondrat Nalyvaiko, Myshko Nalyvaiko, as well as the surname of a Cossack from the Poltava regiment Lavryn Nalyvaichenko.
