Kras

Dictionary meaning

The name 'Kras' is derived by truncating one of the two-root Slavic names, such as Krasibor, Krasimil, Krasislav, Nekras, which contain the noun root 'kras' (beauty). The anthroposystem 'Kras-' is also represented in other Ukrainian anthroonyms, particularly in surnames. For example, in 1775 the name 'Krasa' is mentioned, in 1648 - 'Kraszin', and in 1715 - serf Andrii Krasok from Rika. The personal name 'Kras' in this form is very rarely attested in Ukrainian written monuments. For instance, in 1439 'Kras' is found. It has been used in Belarus (e.g., Kras Piotrovicz), Bulgaria (Ilchev), the Czech Republic, and other Slavic countries. More often, this name appears in complex forms in surnames, such as in 1666 the patronymic 'Krasenko', and in 1654 the Cossack Krasun Fyodor from Bila Tserkva. It is also worth comparing with the name of the village Krašyshcha (Polissia district of Kyiv region), which is formed from the same base using the patronymic suffix -yata.
