The feminine personal name "Horlytsia" has counterparts in the languages of many Slavic peoples. The name derives from the name of the bird, the turtledove. Among Ukrainians, this name has also come to be used as a surname or designation. For example, in 1421, a witness named Horlytsia Veletsky is mentioned in a document from the 15th century in the city of Peremyshl.
