Fal

Dictionary meaning

In the Ukrainian name "Fal," one can see its origin from the truncated two-root name "Falъvynyklo," which, in turn, derives from the name "Khalъ" (< "Khalimirь" or "Khalislavъ"). Historically, in the process of adapting to new phonetic requirements, the traditional sound combination /kh/ changed to /f/. This is also observed in the verb "khality" (to praise) and the noun "khvala" (praise), as well as in many words of Greek, Latin, and German origin, such as "Kvedir," "khvyrtka" (gate), and in Slavic-derived words like "khalitisya" (to boast), "khal'ko" (boaster), and "khvatitъ" (to suffice). Interestingly, historical documents contain records such as the patronymic "Ivan Falеvych" (1429) and a note about the Cossack from the Bila Tserkva Regiment, "Falъko Pavlenko." Today, there are modern Ukrainian surnames like "Fal'kevych" and "Fal'kovskyi."
