Name «Chermak»

The name 'Chermak' likely originates from the nickname 'Chèrmny', which means 'black'. This nickname has been mentioned in Kyiv and Galicia since the early 12th century (LL 405; IL 499; LR 382, 386). The anthroponym 'Chermak' is documented in 1498: "and in Chermak with his brother..." (SSUM II 536). In Poland, the anthroponym 'Czermak' / 'Czyrmak' is mentioned a hundred years earlier (SSNO I 438).
