Meaning

The name Bolezhyr originates from the name of the Bolézhyr River, which is a left tributary of the Western Bug River in the area of the city of Brest. Records from 1566 refer to the river as Bolézhyrskaya. It is also possible that the origin of the name Bolezhyr can be linked to the Hungarian record of the Transcarpathian village of Vasher, which was mentioned in 1348. Additionally, names with the root "bole-" are found in other Slavic languages, where "bole-" means 'more,' and "-zhyr" can be interpreted as 'life' or 'acorn.'
