Official name transliteration for your passport

Latin spelling in a Ukrainian foreign passport follows CMU Resolution No. 55. It can differ from informal English (e.g. Наталія → Nataliia). This tool shows the official form plus airline and bank-card variants.

Frequently asked questions

Why does «Наталія» become «Nataliia»?

Under CMU Resolution No. 55, «і» maps to «i» and final «я» to «ia», so the official form has a double «i»: Nataliia. The informal Western Natalia is educational only, not legal.

What does the «зг» → «zgh» rule mean?

The combination «зг» is transliterated as «zgh» to distinguish it from separate «з» + «г» in Latin (e.g. Згорани → Zghorany).

Is the soft sign «ь» transliterated?

No. Under CMU Resolution No. 55 the soft sign and apostrophe are omitted in transliteration.

Can I use the informal variant on an airline ticket?

Tickets and MRZ normally follow the foreign-passport spelling (often ALL CAPS). The informal US/EU variant does not replace the official passport form.

What are the most common transliteration mistakes?

The biggest trap is using Russian-style Latin: Г as G (Ukrainian passport uses H; only Ґ is G), И as I (Ukrainian uses Y; І is I), Щ as Sch (Ukrainian uses Shch), and names like Сергей→Sergey / Ольга→Olga instead of Serhii / Olha. Also avoid dropping the double i in -ія (Nataliia, not Natalia) and inventing Ye/Yu in the middle of a word where CMU №55 wants ie/iu.

Why is Russian transliteration wrong for a Ukrainian passport?

A Ukrainian foreign passport follows CMU Resolution No. 55, not Russian GOST/ICAO habits. Russian-looking Latin (Gorbunov, Yuliya mid-word patterns, Sch for щ) can mismatch your passport, tickets, and bank cards. Always match the UA passport spelling letter-for-letter.

How can I remember the Ukrainian rules?

Memory cues: 1) Ukrainian Г sounds closer to English H in passport Latin — write H, save G for Ґ. 2) И→Y, І→I (think «и looks like y»). 3) Ye/Yi/Yu/Ya only at the start of a word; inside use ie/i/iu/ia. 4) Soft sign and apostrophe vanish. 5) зг gets a bridge h → zgh. 6) -ія endings keep both i letters (Nataliia). Check once, save the card, reuse it everywhere.
